SPOP Closure FAQs

Why is the Stony Plain Outdoor Pool closed?

The Stony Plain Outdoor Pool is temporarily closed while we address an unexpected water quality concern. The health and safety of our guests is our top priority, and we are working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.

What have you been doing so far?

The actions our team has already taken to correct the issue include draining off some of the water and extra chemical treatment. It will take some time as we wait for the results of the treatment to see if the actions taken were successful.

How is the pool’s water quality monitored?

Water quality is monitored throughout the day to help ensure it meets public health standards. At the Stony Plain Outdoor Pool, staff routinely test the water approximately every four hours—well above the minimum testing frequency required by Alberta Health Services.

As part of routine water quality monitoring, water samples may occasionally detect bacteria or other micro-organisms. When this happens, established public health procedures are followed, which can include additional testing, treatment, and, if necessary, temporarily closing the pool until it is safe to reopen.

The health and safety of our guests is our top priority, and the pool will only reopen once all required standards have been met.

When will the pool reopen?

At this time, we do not have a confirmed reopening date. We will reopen the pool once it has been cleared for use and we are confident it is safe for our guests.

Why do I need to shower before entering the pool?

A quick shower before swimming is one of the easiest ways everyone can help keep the pool water clean.

Even if you’re wearing appropriate swimwear, showering removes sweat, dirt, body oils, lotions, sunscreen, and other products that can enter the water. These substances react with the pool’s disinfectants, making them work harder to keep the water clean and reducing their effectiveness. Showering also helps reduce the spread of germs.

A 60-second shower before entering the pool helps maintain better water quality, supports the effectiveness of the pool’s treatment systems, and creates a safer, more enjoyable swimming environment for everyone.

Keeping our pool water clean is a shared responsibility, and something as simple as taking a quick shower before you swim can make a big difference.
