Important Information on Air Quality at the TLC’s Aquatic Centre
We want to address a recent social media post regarding the air quality at our Aquatic Centre. We sincerely thank our concerned patrons for bringing this to our attention.
Since the summer, we have been addressing concerns about the air quality of our Aquatic Centre at the TLC. We are cooperating with Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) and Alberta Health to conduct comprehensive air quality testing.
Here’s what we know:
- Recently, staff identified increased discomfort on shift and said the air quality sometimes felt unpleasant.
- The air handling unit is operating as designed.
- Trichloramines reduce air quality, they occur when bodily fluids such as sweat or urine and/or perfumes and lotions come into contact with chlorine in the water.
Here’s what we’re doing:
- We are exploring the root causes of the air quality concerns.
- Increased education for the public and user groups on the importance of a cleansing shower before entering the pool.
- We are monitoring the levels of numerous air quality components, including trichloramines.
- We continue to cooperate with OH&S and AHS regarding these air quality concerns.
Rest assured, the safety and well-being of our staff and patrons remain our top priority. To support our staff, we’ve implemented additional information and training on chloramines. For our patrons, our ongoing educational campaign will provide information on how everyone can play a role in minimizing chloramines in the aquatic environment.
