2017 was another busy year at the TLC. In total, close to 2,000,000 visitors participated in a wide variety of programs, events, activities and services. Included in the 2,000,000 visitors, our 6100 members swiped in more than 268,000 times and we received more than 110,000 registrations in TLC programs.
Although much of the Centre’s day-to-day business revolves around sports and recreation, there were also a number of special events in 2017. For starters, the TLC held two major concert events, hosting Kip Moore and Emerson Drive. Approximately 2,000 concert goers were entertained by these performers, many of whom travelled a significant distance to attend. After a year hiatus as a result of the Fort McMurray wild fires, the Alberta Surface Mine Rescue Competition returned this year. This unique and exciting event uses all the TLC has to offer including both arenas, both fieldhouses, the gymnasium, meeting rooms and the parking lot, while showcasing the skills of the mine rescue workers. Other unique events included The Backyardigans Family Day Show, Spring Fling Home & Garden Trade Expo, Tri Municipal Trade Expo, Little Monsters Swap Meets, Spruce Grove Rotary Club Lobsterfest, Parkland School Division’s Try Me Triathlon, the City of Spruce Grove’s Remembrance Day Ceremony, Silver Bells Winter Market and many more. The TLC is truly a multi-purpose venue capable of meeting the needs of a wide range of activities for residents.
On the facility side, this year included a number of key infrastructure projects at the facility. Specifically, two projects helped to make the facility more visually appealing to its users. These included completion of a landscape revitalization at the main entry of the building, as well as a renovation to the aquatic change rooms. The landscaping project was completed with the assistance of an $80,000 Community Facility Enhancement Program grant and really changed the look and feel at the front face of the building. The change room project included new tile and paint throughout, as well as upgraded fixtures, countertops and benches, which after 15 years of heavy use was a much needed enhancement. Looking forward, the facility will continue to see improvements to ensure that it is capable of handling the high volume of people through the doors on a daily basis.
The TLC is also proud to have worked in conjunction with the Town of Stony Plain on the operations of the Stony Plain Outdoor Pool and Spray Park. This collaboration serves as a great example of the benefits created through partnership. The Aquatics team did an excellent job preparing for and delivering fantastic programs and services for the outdoor pool’s clients. It is exciting to have had this opportunity and there is hope that future relationships can be developed to continue offering the value and efficiency that this partnership allowed.
