Why I Love the Olympics
With the closing of the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio I have been thinking about what it is that draws me (and so many of us) to Olympic competition and ultimately makes us ravenous consumers of the spectacle? Isn’t there more wrong than right with the world’s most celebrated sporting competition? From political scandals, environmental irresponsibility and the far too many cheaters that are allowed to participate Why then can I not tear myself away from the action every two years?
It is truly something to be able to see the level of the athletes participating in so many different sports from so many different countries. Working in the field of fitness and recreation, as well as being a father and coach of a few different teams in the community, I have an admiration of the demonstration of elite athleticism. When I see the unrelenting dedication of these athletes and the team of professionals behind each one, I am even more inspired to work hard with my own kids and their teams, and go that extra mile in search of excellence.
Besides incredible ability in and dedication to their chosen sports, these athletes offer us pure and raw emotion behind both their successes and failures. But nothing is more appealing than being able to take it all in with my family. To see the excitement and the anticipation on the faces of my children before the events and then the look of amazement as medals are awarded.
The Olympic Games are far from perfect in all the ways we continue to hear from the media, but despite all this I enjoy nothing more than watching Olympic competition with my family. The awe, the wonder, and the total sense of possibility I see in my children more than makes up for the inadequacies of the commodity that is the Olympic Games.
Here’s to the Olympics and to Rio 2016.
What was the one thing you will take away from this summer’s Olympic Games?
